Join The StartOver Foundation as a volunteer and make a meaningful impact in the lives of people transitioning from incarceration to community life. We welcome compassionate, reliable individuals who want to contribute time and skills to support reentry services, mentorship, and community reintegration programs.

Who we need

  • Mentors: Provide one-on-one guidance, encouragement, and accountability to clients as they build stability and pursue goals.

  • Program facilitators: Lead or assist workshops on life skills, job readiness, financial literacy, and healthy relationships.

  • Tutors and education aides: Support GED preparation, literacy, ESL, and continuing-education efforts.

  • Employment navigators: Help clients create resumes, practice interviewing, identify job opportunities, and connect with employers.

  • Housing and resource navigators: Assist clients in locating housing, accessing benefits, and connecting with community services.

  • Event and outreach volunteers: Staff events, fundraisers, and community awareness activities; distribute materials and represent the organization.

  • Administrative and operations support: Provide office assistance, data entry, logistics, and other behind-the-scenes functions.

  • Legal and clinical pro bono contributors: Offer limited legal consultations, counseling, or clinical supervision as appropriate and credentialed.

What volunteers can expect

  • Meaningful work: Direct interaction with clients and tangible contributions to their reentry success.

  • Training and supervision: Orientation, role-specific training, and ongoing support from staff and experienced volunteers.

  • Flexible opportunities: Short-term projects, recurring weekly roles, and remote tasks when available.

  • Safe, structured environment: Work under established policies, confidentiality requirements, and clear boundaries.

  • Community and development: Join a committed team, participate in volunteer meetings, and access skill-building opportunities.

Basic requirements

  • Minimum age 18 (some roles may require 21+)

  • Commitment to the role’s time expectations (varies by position)

  • Background check and reference checks as required by role

  • Completion of orientation and any role-specific training

  • Respect for client confidentiality, nonjudgmental approach, and alignment with The StartOver Foundation’s mission and values

How to apply

  • Complete a volunteer application and indicate preferred roles and availability.

  • Attend an orientation session and complete required training.

  • Participate in any role-specific interviews or screenings (e.g., background checks, credential verification).

  • Begin a supervised onboarding period before independent volunteer work.
